In November of 1987, after the 6th All China Games, the majority of the Beijing
Wushu team members decided to leave the team and start new lives. A lot of them
left China to teach Wushu, whereas others retired from Wushu completely. Yan
decided to stay in China and help teach the next generation of Wushu Heroes.
So in January of 1988 Yan started as an assistant coach at Shichahai. After
eight months she decided to make coaching Wushu her career and left Shichahai in
August to go to University.
In September 1988 she sat the exam to enter the Beijing Capital Sports
University and was accepted to start a 3 year course studying Sports Science.
This University is a teacher training college, its specific role being to teach
sport instructors. The course taught her the theory and practice of teaching
sport in general, which she could then apply to her teaching of Wushu.
In 1991 she graduated and was accepted by Wu Bin as a coach at his school. Her
first students were junior school children, these children being much the same
as she was when she first started Wushu almost 20 years before. She taught at
this school for four years, training many young athletes.

Many of her first students were afterwards accepted into the Beijing
Wushu Team, who then went on to achieve success in both Beijing and
National competitions. For example, Li Qiang and Chen Chen became
Chinese National Champions, and Cao Yue, Duan Xiao and Meng Deying
becoming Beijing Champions.
